The shift from Community College to UC Merced can be a but overwhelming at first. Here is some inside information that can aide you in making the adjustment to a new UC campus.

1. UC Merced openned it's door's in Fall of 2005. The vast majority of the students were from California, and lived on campus for a year, thus creating a small but tight-knit community that resembles a small private liberal art college. This phenomenon can make it difficult for new transfer students to feel at ease. The following points well help you integrate into the UC Merced Community:

  • Engage in campus clubs and orginizations that fit your intrests. You can see some Clubs and Student Organizations here
  • If you have an interest that is not reflected in any of the clubs already established on campus, start one!  Meet with someone from the Office of Student Life, they can help you create your club!

  • Get involved with research with one of your professors. You will also work closely with other students who have similar interests. Being a part of academic research also helps when applying for grad school. More tips on finding research opportunities can be found here

  • One of the most effective ways for studying, and getting to know other students is participating in study groups outside of class. This may seem common sense, but many Community College students are foreign to studying in large groups, and it's effectiveness.

2. Generally transfer students come in with a Junior standing, and will take upper division classes. Becuase UC Merced is so new, there are some kinks in the system that may throw you off. Here are some tips:

  • When registering for classes, the registration systems has not yet recognized anyone as being eligible for upper-division classes. You will need to find the classes you want to take, then email or see your councellor to remove the holds that impede you from adding these classes.
  • Meet or email your requests for overrides to the system can take time.  Be sure to speak with your councellor early in the registration period and ask for the overrides early to ensure she overides your hold before the class fills.

3. For those who are some distance away from home, UC Merced has an Amtrak station only a few miles from campus, and has a shuttle that can take you there. You can look at the Amtrak site here for train fares, and schedules of arrivals and departures
